Graduation Spotlight: Livvy Lightholder

A Tennessee cheerleader in uniform

Livvy Lightholder graduates this spring with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. After graduation, she plans to continue her education at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine!

Where are you from?

Knoxville, Tennessee!

What drew you to the Herbert College of Agriculture and/or UT Knoxville?

Being from Knoxville, UT has always felt like home! I knew that Herbert would give me a strong sense of community within such a big school where I could gain real-world experiences all while building strong relationships with both my peers and faculty.

What is your fondest memory and/or proudest moment as a Vol?

My proudest moments as a Vol come from all the opportunities I’ve had to represent this university. Whether it’s cheering on our sports teams or giving tours to prospective students and families, each opportunity allows me to represent something bigger than myself and give a little back to the place that has given me so much!

What has been your favorite thing about being a Herbert/animal science student?

My favorite part of being an animal science student is that I have been able to gain experiences that have prepared me for my future in veterinary medicine. Because of Herbert, I have gotten to surround myself with individuals who share similar passions and goals, making this experience even more meaningful.

How did studying abroad make your college experience more exciting?

I had the opportunity to study abroad in San Ignacio, Belize, for two weeks of my summer in 2024. I also studied abroad in various cities in Zimbabwe during the summer of 2025! My favorite part about these study abroad programs was that they gave me hands-on experiences with animals that I could not find anywhere else. I got to meet so many great people and it gave me memories that will stick with me forever!

How did you stay inVOLved during your time here?

I stayed involved during my time as an undergraduate student by getting connected both in Herbert, the university as a whole, and the Knoxville community. I have the honor of being a University of Tennessee cheerleader, Herbert College of Agriculture Ambassador, member of Alpha Delta Pi, member of the Pre-Veterinary Association, Zoo Knoxville volunteer, and much more in between!

Any faculty or staff mentors you want to give a shoutout to?

The faculty I’ve met through my time in Herbert have made the biggest difference in my college years! Cassie Johnson, my advisor, Kallie Noblin, and incredible professors who have helped fuel my passion for animal science, like Dr. Mathew and Dr. McLean.

How has Herbert and/or UT Knoxville helped prepare you for what comes next?

Herbert and UT have really prepared me by giving me a mix of real experiences and strong academics. Being involved in things like clubs, volunteering, and working with animals has helped me grow a lot outside the classroom, too. I’ve learned how to manage my time, work with different people, and handle challenges, which I know will help me as I move forward into veterinary school.

What does being a Volunteer mean to you?

To me, it’s about the people and the community more than anything. The relationships I’ve built here and the support from others have made my experience at UT what it is!
