Animal Science, PhD
The Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science is a comprehensive program that combines research and education in animal physiology, animal health and well-being and genomics. As the only program of its kind in the state, the animal science PhD program combines high-level coursework with specialized research to prepare graduates for positions in higher education or the animal industry.
Program Overview
The animal science doctoral degree provides students with the highest level of education in ruminant and monogastric nutrition, reproduction, stress, immunology, genomics, microbiology, pre-harvest food safety and behavior in animals. With an emphasis on experiential learning with animal species, like beef and dairy cattle, poultry, swine and small ruminants, students gain valuable hands-on learning experiences under the guidance of renowned faculty.
Coursework and research prepare students for the investigation of fundamental problems associated with animal production. This flexible degree program allows students to choose their courses and research focus to create a personalized learning experience.
Concentrations
Students in this graduate program pursue a general doctoral degree in animal science.
Why study Animal Science?
Graduate Fellowships
Graduate fellowships are available for doctoral students to finance their degree. Funding is also available through teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and biweekly payroll assignments.
Research at the Forefront
Research is at the forefront of the Department of Animal Science. Professors in the department have dual appointments in teaching and research or Extension and research. These joint appointments promote outreach and connections in the animal industry while also helping students to gain unique experiences in innovative research and Extension practices.
Research topics consist of animal health and welfare, genetics and genomics, nutrition physiology and reproductive physiology. Upon completion of this program, students should be able to conduct independent research.
What can you do with a degree in Animal Science?
A PhD in animal science prepares students to enter the workforce with a wide range of skills in research and animal industries. Alumni are experts in their fields, holding careers in higher education, animal pharmaceuticals, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, farm/animal management, and pre- and post-harvest food safety.
