Our Why

Agriculture is not only the top industry in the state of Tennessee, but one of the most crucial fields in the world. It is a cornerstone of the global economy and provides life’s most precious resources—food, clothing, construction materials, paper products, and more.

Students pursue academic programs in the Herbert College of Agriculture to develop the skills needed to take on the responsibility of providing such necessities and protecting our natural resources in an ever-growing population.

Starting in fall 2026, the college will offer its first bachelor’s degree within the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology—bioinformatics—combining the disciplines of microbiology, plant sciences, electrical engineering, and computer science.
