The Herbert Difference and the Student-Athlete Experience

Maurese Smith is a graduate student in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communications. He is better known, however, for his role as number fifty-two on the football field. Smith plays as a defensive lineman for the Vols. He originally played for Alabama A&M University prior to coming to the University of Tennessee. He is a native of Hazel Green, Alabama, and is the son of Tyrone and Mia Smith. He has been named to the SEC Honor Roll for his academic work, and the Herbert College of Agriculture is proud to have athletes who represent our school well. Members of the Herbert communications team sat down with Maurese to hear about his experience.

What made you choose your major?
I was meeting with Dean Beyl, and Dr. Sorochan came in and talked about the turf industry and I’ve been hooked ever since.

What unique experiences have you had as a student-athlete?
I am a part of the SAAC (NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) here and I think it is pretty cool that the coaches think that highly of me to represent the team. Another unique experience is running through the “T” because there is no other feeling like it.

What is your favorite thing about the Herbert College of Agriculture?
My favorite thing about Herbert College of Agriculture is the relationships everyone has with each other; they really want to see you succeed.

Any favorite memories/parts of college you’d like to note?
Being selected to the national honor society was a pretty cool moment for me.

Any favorite professors?
Would have to be Dr. (Carrie) Stephens, Dr. (John) Sorochan, and Dr. (Jennifer) Richards!
